A Father's Advice About Learning the Mission of Life

Not My “Demographic”

Marketing in the Old DaysOver the years we have all been marketed to. Likely millions of products and services, piles of entertainment choices of music, books and movies. Mining the  “popular culture” that has become the goal of companies wanting your attention.

One of the things those marketing strategists focus on is taking a  look at is who things appeal to; Like what age bracket, what ethnic group, what income bracket, where you live and work.

Once they have “their demographic” target, they create the plan. The plan to appeal to that target, whether it is a teen, a tween, the young or the senior market among others –  there is a place to aim the message or the talent.

Maybe this happens to you:  My wife and I will see things on television or in advertising in magazines  or the web and wonder “who the heck would ever want that?”  Sometimes the media makes it seem that “everyone” is paying attention (but they aren’t) . They make it appear that every one is tuning in to the next “reality” show to see someone win or lose, or tune in to see things like Honey Boo-boo disgust us so we can feel better about our own lives.

As I get older I realize that these things aren’t designed to appeal to me (or my wife or others in my generation). This is not new actually- it has been happening since the dawn of the advertising age. From the earliest days of entertainment, from the beginning of the newspaper or selling soap, from Elvis or the Beatles to Justin Bieber. There is a plan on who will and will not “get it”… it will be something parents shake their head at (Elvis and his pelvis, John & Paul and those haircuts) , or kids wont ever understand about their parents . It just happens.

Are you part of the Generation X, Y or Z? Are you a baby-boomer? In the scheme of things in your busy life it likely doesn’t matter at all to you. But someone is thinking about what you want- so they can be sure to supply it and make their mark on the world by gaining profit or recognition. They are out there.

I remember when I was a kid The Who singing “My Generation”  and thinking it spoke for the voice of my peers. Listening to it now, it seems old and archaic – like “either burn out or fade away”  of the 60’s… or something.

In the end I have learned, I need to accept change as a challenge of my generation, like with each generation before and after me… all of whom are getting older and looking at those other demographics and wondering in amazement… who on earth would really like these things/why is that so popular? who would every buy that?

Accepting change is always the challenge of a generation- when it is happening so fast, maybe change itself is something the new generations find so appealing now?

So fellow bloggers and Internet surfers, what is that  is that for you?

What is it that just is too hard to believe anyone should be interested in but seems so popular  What is that makes you ask the question “why” does that exist? (LEAVE A COMMENT)

Who cares?   You just don’t get it (maybe it’s not your demographic).

106 Billion People Since the Beginning of Time

Microscopic view of sand on the beach

Microscopic view of sand on the beach

We’re significant. We are in motion through time and we are able to influence the future right now in everything we do.

It may sometimes seem that we are like a small speck of sand on the beach.  It has been estimated that a total of 106 billion people have been born since the dawn of the human race (depending on which scientists you want to believe).

But in the process of our lives, we have an opportunity to impact each person and thing around us. Often we may not take it seriously. For some it is maybe a religious search for meaning, for others maybe it is as simple as while we are here we live as we live and then we’re done. (Not my perspective btw).

So you can just get overwhelmed by the sheer thought of it, or you can suck it up and get going. Each moment as you see someone in the street, at work or school. Whether you are meeting them for the first time or maybe the only time, you can influence their perspective on you, on life or just change the moment and send them in a new direction. You may never know you did it, but it can happen. Something you say, something you do, something in your attitude may change how they look at the day or at life itself.

But with your self-absorbed you, you can miss it. You can forget that in the core of your being you can be part of the purpose of life, part of the trigger that sends things going another direction.

Like the concept of the movie “Butterfly Effect or Ray Bradbury‘s short story”Days of Thunder” – where one little incident in the past (a butterfly dying when someone from the future kills it) can change everything about the future.   You have the same effect. Call it the YOU effect.  You can change things about the future in a chain reaction that will go on forever. It could be your part in changing the world. It doesn’t have to be some huge thing you do for “all of mankind” – it is the simple stuff you do everyday.

Don’t stop to look back now- make each day and moment count in the simplest of ways through grace and hope.

In the end, remember that Eternity Matters Most.

One Year Later, Thank You Followers

WordPress 1 YearSo here it is exactly one year later since last February when I started Tracksinthedust.

Like so many others bloggers I have read it was not my intention to collect 1000’s of followers.

Yet it has been fantastic that some of you fellow WordPress bloggers are visiting from time to time, and for my Facebook friends to drop by- it’s always wonderful to get a comment now and then as well.

My hope is that in the course of things my kids catch some of it. They mean the world to me and my wife. Even for my oldest  son who left home at 18 and has never looked back.

I will continue to share some of my journey on my fight with cancer on the Cancer Letters – I pray that isn’t a turn off but I wanted to get that down in writing. Probably more therapeutic for me than for those who  would read it I guess.

It’s been fun touching on music, and lyrics and poems ( on my new page) Songs and Poems from Another Time

It has been great to make some bloggy friends along the way as well!

Most of all I have learned that no matter where people live in the world there are so many similarities. Worries and loves, hates and frustrations, wonders and kindness, spiritual needs and wanting to know how we all fit in.

They are all there in everyone.

Hope that some of you will continue to drop by and leave a comment when it moves you.

Here’s to another year for all of us!

A Most Special Birthday Gift

PostmarkSo not too long ago it was my birthday again. Not complaining at all actually. Pile them on!

I have come to embrace them as I get older and after my cancer diagnosis years ago I made a pact with myself  (and my wife) that birthdays should be celebrated. As I have said before that the alternative to not having a birthday is not a good one. Once you are born it’s nice to have a bunch. If you were never born I guess you wouldn’t miss them.  I used to be kind of embarrassed by them, I would tell others to just let them pass by without observation.

This birthday is #4 since my surgery and radiation. Disease is a scary thing when it includes the words “cancer” and comes with a ton of statistics that show life expectancy based on one thing or another. It made me and my wife and family permanently different that day. It made me truly understand the power of prayer. I am forever thankful even as we face the most challenging thing that has ever (or likely will ever) happen in my lifetime on this Earth.

So when I reached in the mailbox this birthday anniversary, it took on a whole different meaning again. I had 11 cards arrive in the mail from people I don’t even know. Some had a postmarks from Wisconsin, Oregon, and many from Tennessee  They were birthday cards with wishes for a happy life and a long life with the battle ahead. They were like ‘prayers’ from strangers, but not that strange really.

My wife and her friend from Tennessee have been fast-friends corresponding through the Internet for years after her family had been stricken by life threatening cancer that ultimately took lives of family and friends they loved. We even got to meet her a while back when she was in our neck of the woods and had a wonderful time.  In her faith and love, she sent a wonderful card and got others to send cards of prayers & wishes for a happy birthday, including a card with  a half a dozen signatures from her place of work (TVA).

I am (and will always be)  genuinely touched. It was the best birthday present I can remember. It was the statement of God’s grace. It will be a highlight of my life for however long God lets me be here. Making tracksinthedust that will not ever last, but with  the chance to touch others once on their journey with grace while time allows- I hope it will move on long after I am gone.

I am truly blessed. Take your time to send a card or a prayer to someone who needs it.

A New Page @ Tracksinthedust

NewSo its a few short days from my one year anniversary since  I began my blogging journey on WordPress. Admittedly I didn’t have any expectations of how many visits or views I would have. My purpose was to share some of my observations on daily living with my children (at least for more “WWW type” of posterity).

It all started because 4 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 3 prostate cancer. After surgery and radiation therapy and quarterly checks and injections, I started to evaluate my life and what is important.

I realized that my wife and I had shared a lot of wisdom with  our kids, but did they remember any of it? For those of you that have older children who have reached the age when others around them (their peer group & classmates) … you realize that they can end up influencing their direction more than a parent can. Because they want to fit in, or they want to stay out of the crowd around them- it all works to shape their choices and their identity. Not that you cannot do your parental part in their lives for as long as you are part of it, but your exclusive influence over their path to adulthood is shared and measured against all of those things that are happening.

So “tracks” in the dust. We all make tracks, we all influence everyone around us – if even for only the brief moment meeting a stranger in a crowd, or the family and friends that make up our daily sphere of life.

I want to thank those who have visited in the past year, and hopefully the site will be worth visiting from time to time.

I am starting a NEW PAGE called the Songs and Poems of Another Time. “A Play on Words”.

My kids are all musically inclined, as when I was much younger I had a lot more inspiration and I used to pump out lyrics and poems and song ideas day after day for years. I dusted off the notebooks from the 70’s and 80’s that are  full of them and wanted to share them with my kids. SO once again I wanted preserve a few of them off the fading paper pages after all of these years.

Hope you will stop by when you can.
