Tracks In The Dust

A Father's Advice About Learning the Mission of Life

Three Years for Tracksinthedust

Wordpress Anniversary LogoHard to believe that 3 years ago I started writing on Tracksinthedust.com and that its coming up on 10,000 views.

My intention is still the same I guess. Can I leave some messages  that our kids may read one day and perhaps reflect on their lives?  Advice? Maybe not always, But it has been very self-cleansing as well. I am guessing for most bloggers that is the net result, regardless of how many views you get on a post.

Thanks to all who have been visiting. I couldn’t have asked for more than an occasional stop on the busy travel through the Internet highway.

Some personal observations, some music (the image of the soul), and some self-absorbed lyrics/poetry. Thanks to those who have also visited my other blog: The Cancer Letters. http://www.cancerletters.wordpress.com too.

Love Rain

Some of you there is still a few icy months of winter left in the season, while others in distant countries may be in the middle of summer. Either way there is something about rain that I like.   Perhaps you do too?

Rainy Day Picture

It is the cleansing. the renewal, When the snow is finally gotten so dirty that it is grey and unwelcome, here will come the rain. Not flooding rain but constant rain.  There is always something true in the warmth of the days of sunshine. It has its own recharging sense ( like supplying a power pill of Vitamin D). Sun is good- not too much to get sunburned, but the feeling on your face on one of those days that is comfortable enough to let the sun pour over you.

But rain has something for me. The washing off of the dryness of the days before it. The reason to stay protected inside if you can, or to run in it from place to place like it would melt you. But you know better. It is the rain of renewal  Some distant thunder would be nice to help complete the picture. No violent crashing lighting exactly, but that thunder that rumbles over the horizon and sounds like it carries for miles across the landscape.

Rain. It is there for the renewal, it is there for the days to paint grey before the color comes. It is rain.

Everyone’s Personal Movie

I am constantly amazed how many cameras there are in our lives today. Everyone has one in their pocket if they own a smartphone, they are there in public places (look, you can see them up there like one big eye-ball staring down at you).

Lens

There aren’t many places today where a there may not be a picture or video . In elevators, at parties, in shops and restaurants. Every one brings their selfie to life with the wave of a finger. Some how we have gotten much closer to Orwell’s 1984 vision of big brother it would seem.

I noticed today that there are new inexpensive devices that just hang off your collar or purse. Very small they can be activated in a second and carry full digital video capability . It allows us to be in “our own movie” complete with the reality show friends and strangers who populate your view of life around you.  No effort. No getting something out of your purse or pocket. Just a gesture of your hand and you are recording video and sound for your life.

Over the years as I grow older, I realize that there are some fond memories of the past are precious. But in the days of the past no one really thought of pulling out a an old-fashioned movie camera to try to capture the moments. Later when video cameras were available, you still had to remember to have them “at hand” to get the action. Maybe special events where it seemed like a great time to capture the action.

Today there is nothing left to imagine or remember. Just take out the device and push the button. Upload it to the Internet and let it have its permanent place in the “etherweb”. Some of those videos capture ugliness, some capture inappropriate things that should only be a memory, many are not as exciting as those that post them make them out to be. But there they are a permanent entry in the “world-wide web library”.

Comon’- be in my “movie” – my reality TV show of life- complete with fuzzy digital motion that will capture a thread of time that otherwise would have come and gone with nothing but a recollection.

Maybe I’m Amazed

Maybe I’m amazed by the way we can make “something” out of “nothing”. And sometimes we like it and sometimes we hate it.

The Verb "To Love"

Maybe I’m amazed how there are always two stories to everything, and then there is the real story. Looking through our own eyes, we see them through our own lens and it has so many colors.

Maybe I’m amazed that after 30+ years of marriage I am still wildly in love with the same person. Love is not negotiable, it has ups and downs but it can be always and forever.

Maybe I’m amazed that more people don’t know about how find the beginning of something new, and stay stuck in one direction wondering when things will change.

Maybe I’m amazed that we only have a certain amount of time here on Earth, but we treat it so poorly… letting days go by without appreciating our time and using it to do what God has expected us to do. The rewards are endless.

Maybe I’m amazed that there are so many beautiful, wonderful people in this world, yet so many people are attracted to the negative things around them.

We all have a path. For us so fortunate to be able to make choices, we can. Yes we have the ability to change. We can choose at any moment to make things better.

So with so many in the world that cannot choose, we need to take that power and choose for the better. Help show others the way. Be amazed.

REPOSTING FROM 8/2013

If The Sun Refused To Shine

This song Led Zeppelin song has been with me since I was a teen. Long forgotten, I still love it and it still has meaning decades later.

To my lovely wife. Thank You.

If The Sun Refused to ShineThank You

  1. If the sun refused to shine
I would still be loving you
When mountains crumble to the sea
There’ll still be you and me
Kind woman, I give you my all
    Kind woman, nothing more
Little drops of rain, whisper of the pain
Tears of loves lost in the days gone by
My love is strong with you there is no wrong
Together we shall go until we die
Inspiration is what you are to me
    Inspiration, look to see
And so today, my world it smiles
Your hand in mine we walk the miles
Thanks to you it will be done
For you to me are the only one
    Happiness, no longer sad
    Happiness, I’m glad
If the sun refused to shine
I would still be loving you
When mountains crumble to the sea
There’ll still be you and me, and me
